the smell 8, the sun hums | CC BY

this l.a. weekly article on the smell is a great read. it touches on a ton of great local acts (no age, mika miko, abe vigoda, lucky dragons) and articulates the tension obviously present when something small, close-knit, and d.i.y, hits the mainstream in a serious way. i found this particular passage interesting, as it is something that i know too well playing in bands during high school (albeit in seattle, not in L.A.):

Like most of the kids who’ve found purchase in The Smell’s hallowed din, Randall and Spunt were refugees from L.A.’s rock-club scene. “One of the first places I ever played was The Cobalt Café, in the Valley,” Spunt recalls. “They’d do a bill of six local bands, and when you walked in, they asked you what band you were there to see and, once you got over 50 people for your band — which was impossible — then you got 50 bucks and dollar a head after that.”

Spunt adds, “They made you really feel like a kid.” Never mind that he still was one. “The first time playing The Smell, it was the antiversion of that.” No booze. No tickets. No backstage. No bullshit. No security hassling you. No pay to play. The Smell is the very definition of anticlub. “At The Smell,” Spunt says, “you were treated as an equal.”

i had something similar in my town, a place that nurtured kids making music instead of exploiting them. i feel like if i hadn’t had that i would have grown with an underlying assumption that ‘this is the way it works’, a mind set i see every now and then amongst some of my peers, that really stunts peoples attempts to expand, try new things, and be experimental – not only in an artistic sense but in community and cultural practices.

the whole article is super interesting and a provides some insight into the type of community that has been nurtured in downtown l.a., which is undoubtedly one of the odder places in the u.s. (a complete mélange of cultures and a perfect snapshot of l.a.’s diversity). i had to stop myself numerous times from basically quoting the whole piece so just read it – doesn’t take too long.

i’ve never played a show at the smell – hope i will sometime soon.

I haven’t discussed No Age here yet, but I am a real big fan. Caught them live a couple weeks ago and they put on an amazing live show. Great interaction with the crowd and tons of passion for what they were doing. Pitchfork did an interview with them last week and it made me like them that much more. Check it here:

Pitchfork: What are other [personal politics] that you have?

RR: It starts to get a little bit more abstract. Just being a nice guy. Just being honest. Working towards being straight about your feelings, but those become more abstract. It’s not as [straightforward] as “you ate an egg, you’re not vegan.” It’s more like you told someone you really like them and you felt ambivalent about it.

Personal politics are important in an age when our voices are represented and we can stand up as a group or as an individual and find satisfaction in your views. I feel like being vegan or not driving a car or just choosing to live your life in whichever way you want to is really important because it’s your life and it means something. Versus just being a voter: We can all vote for Obama or all vote for Hillary, but it doesn’t really say who I am as a person.

This year we’re going to be asked to represent a lot of values. You know, liberal–minded punks will be called upon to support some interesting issues and I still feel like the personal issues are still there. They’re not going to be dwarfed by the bigger politics.

I really like these two videos. The Cornelius clip acts to further my infatuation with his music, meaning the video in itself reminds me of why I appreciate what he does in the first place. Everything is incredibly intricate and stimulates my senses, but rather than indulge me with any one thematic component, the video changes visual stimuli on a fairly consistent basis. When all those blocks build up just to fall down, it echoes the same sort of restraint that makes Cornelius’ music so incredible to listen to.

With the No Age clip I saw a band that, up until this point, I have given only half-attention. This isn’t due to the fact that their music disinterests me but rather that like many new acts, it is hard to know who and what you should earmark for further exploration. Needless to say Weirdo Rippers is cued up in iTunes right now…
