Learning Music is a seriously dope project from the good friend John Wood. Basically, every month John releases a new album full of songs that stretch your imagination and musical palette. He has a stunning pop-sensibility and writes, records, mixes, and masters all of the music himself.
You can download a ton of tracks for free or, if you’re into it and a good soul, subscribe to the project at a variety of levels. I’m a subscriber and am always floored when I hear what he comes up with for each instalment, which shows up conviently in my mailbox on the first of every month courtesy of Vosotros.
A while ago I told John I wanted to cover his song Electric Letter, which I still want us to do. He beat me to the cover punch though by dropping an amazing version of Cranial Contest on this month’s album, You Can Take It In. The track just kills – way more complex musically than I could compute and recording wise it is perfect. That synth that comes in around the one minute mark just totally blows me away.

his clancyness is a canadian ex-pat living in bologna. he hit me up with his music and we’ve been buds ever since. he even got us some nice features on some crazy far-out italian blogs. i’ve been digging his music a lot (as has some more prominent members of the music establishment) so be sure to peep these tracks. the writing is on the wall so expect superhumanoids to be touring italy and day now.
the following two tracks are examples of his lo-fi prowess – ITYW is a great pop tune with some up-front vocals while NNTG builds off a nite jewel sample to do up a slow build dream-scape. the clancyness has a mixtape up for free download and also plays in a classic education.

More good stuff from local friends – I love Rumspringa like crazy and am stoked they have a new video together. Directed by Shia LaBeouf! Crazy world L.A. is:
We share a rehearsal space with Local Natives. Really cool guys who make great music. Just found out they had a rad cover of Cecilia online – love their harmonies:

friend does graphic design primarily (and i assume for money) and makes weird synth/space disco when he can. he may never tour, and may never produce more than a couple tracks a year, but the wondrous result of digital technology is that he is able to do this sort of thing with relative ease and not stress about distribution/pr/the like. his songs are good (and show promises of greatness) and i’m just happy i was able to get in the know about him, no matter where he heads.

Rumspringa are an LA band I’m friends with who are super rad. I always describe them as The Black Keys meets Devendra Banhart, an unfortunately blunt analogy. Regardless they are dope as hell live and have some of the best tones of any act I’ve played with:

Slang Chickens are a super rad group of real cool/nice dudes – very open and accepting of who The Franks before we really started playing any shows, which I’ll always be thankful for. We played with them last night and they sounded great – their tones were phenomenal and overall the had a super tight sound.
This video is them playing on a boat in Long Beach, which is undoubtedly cool:
