His Clancyness: "I Trust Your Way" + "Nothing and Nowhere To Go" AUDIO

l_a6c62692f5bc4ab0bc9e79906e03b950

his clancyness is a canadian ex-pat living in bologna. he hit me up with his music and we’ve been buds ever since. he even got us some nice features on some crazy far-out italian blogs. i’ve been digging his music a lot (as has some more prominent members of the music establishment) so be sure to peep these tracks. the writing is on the wall so expect superhumanoids to be touring italy and day now.

the following two tracks are examples of his lo-fi prowess – ITYW is a great pop tune with some up-front vocals while NNTG builds off a nite jewel sample to do up a slow build dream-scape. the clancyness has a mixtape up for free download and also plays in a classic education.

Junior Boys: "Parallell Lines" AUDIO

Day 1: Junior Boys – “In the Morning”, The Gentle | CC BY-SA

junior boys have quietly released their latest album, begone dull care, catching me by surprise in that i didn’t hear about it at all leading up to the release. it is a stellar follow up to so this is goodbye, one of my fav albums of the past couple years, and it has made me especially stoked to see them at coachella this weekend.

if parallel lines, the album’s opener, doesn’t get you pumped up then something is wrong. very industrial production sound, which is a pretty cool/bold style to take on:

The Samps: "Magnetic Thys" & "Mashed Skins" AUDIO

The Samps! is doing some of the incredibely interesting sample-based electro pop. I really don’t even know how to categorize this (a good thing) although it does very well to blend electronic music history (80s drum machines, 70s synths, etc.) while utilizing contemporary production techniques (an adherence to samples) and aesthetics (sound collage).

Flying Lotus: "Breathe . Something/Stellar STar" AUDIO

flying lotus by Drakh | CC BY-NC

i first heard flying lotus from a motel de moka mixtape a while back – the song was tea leaf dancers and it blew me away. like many, flying lotus reminds me a lot of dilla and madlib, which may have less to do with his specific style (although he is a skilled practitioner off the un-quantized beat) and more to do with his ability to create tracks that evoke an incredible mood/atmosphere and push hip-hop into uncharted territories.

aesthetically, my favorite aspects of flylo’s music are the cold audio artifacts – snaps and crackles that sound thin and filtered – he combines with his incredible low-end. his production is purely organic, which is something that is much more difficult to achieve than one would initially think. his latest solo effort los angeles and subsequent EPs have been phenomenal but i tend to find his remixes to be incredibly engaging in their own right. his remix of radiohead’s reckoner was sublime and, as i talked about a couple months ago, he took lil wayne to a new level.

everyone is saying it – i’m just joining the chorus: flying lotus is the most exciting producer around these days. cool article on him in the new yorker as well.

The Scene

Sarah likes Sydney the best. I like the dude right ager (Han Solo-y?). “I’m Ready” also happens to be the bomb. I love when it kicks off “Never Scared” (via MFR).

Italians Do It WAY FUCKING BETTER

I fucking love everything put out by Italians Do It Better. I just got the new Chromatics album and it kills – it is so spooky and bizarre and beautiful. It reminds me of being in a car late at night driving through the rain. There is also a new Glass Candy track out which is a head-trip. The bass is so big and fuzzy and wonderful.

Both those groups have unbelievable production coming via Johnny Jewel, who is a member of Chromatics and half of Glass Candy. Seems like a pretty cool dude. His drums and synths always sound perfect.
