i saw the wrestler last night and it exceeded expectations ten fold. my favorite film of this ‘oscar push’ season – it is beautiful, harrowing, and like all my favorite art exposes an incredible story in an unexpected arena. it is humanist in the truest sense. mickey rourke and darren aronofsky excels while expandsing his breadth as an auteur. is phenomenal mick foley (mankind) has a great piece about at slate:
I found great authenticity in so many aspects of Randy’s battered psyche. His constant need for acceptance—from his estranged daughter; from his possible love interest, a stripper played by Marisa Tomei (who is wonderful, if a bit shocking for any guy who ever had a crush on her in My Cousin Vinny); from a random collection of customers at the deli counter where he works; from his dwindling number of nostalgic wrestling fans—is a theme that many a wrestler will grudgingly admit to connecting with. The scene depicting a poorly attended “Legends Convention” where Randy, a man so proud of his past, is forced not only to accept his present but to take a glimpse at the future, will strike an uncomfortable yet legitimate chord with every wrestling star whose personal appearances have ever been met with a symphony of silence.
more from this isn’t happiness:

Simply beautiful. I had no idea Alexis Taylor (lead singer of Hot Chip) had a solo-album coming out so this was an amazing surprise. Just ordered it from England, can’t wait for it to come in the mail.
Coming Up is a cover of an 80s Paul McCartney track, which is both a testement to Taylor’s ability to create beauty out of absurdity and also shows that, despite lame instrumentation, McCartney never lost his ability to craft melody or structure a song (via The FADER):

The unexplainable beauty of telescope photography never ceases to amaze me:
I’ve been meaning to post about Chairlift for a while – I caught them live at the Echoplex on a whim and was completely blown away. While their album isn’t as good as their live show, there is a true gem in “Planet Health”, a song that transcends its more obvious aesthetic nods to 1980s electronica, easily becoming one of my favorite songs of the year. Their video for it is a treat as well, perfectly invoking the emotions of the song through visuals:
There is an equally amazing version of this song available here but it isn’t embeddable:
