“Persona” Video

I directed the video for Urgency’s lead single ‘Persona’, seen above, and couldn’t be more pleased with the result. A lot of people’s valuable time and hard work went into this, and while I’ll spare you the Academy speech I would be remiss without offering heartfelt thanks to everybody involved in the making of this gem.

We were quite fortunate to premiere the video on one of my favorite sites on the whole internet: Future Shipwreck, owned and operated by new buddy Graham. Over there he’s got the video, some on set photos and a long-winded interview with yours truly. Get lost in his site, FS is as well curated and thoughtful as it gets.

The story is rather open-ended, so leave any theories (Lost) in the comments below. Enjoy!

URGENCY: Sunset Lodge Studio/The Cave

recording of urgency began at sunset lodge studio – a gem of a place hidden behind solutions’ elliott smith wall in sivlerlake

sunset lodge is run by chris rakestraw who is straight up incredible – wired/built the whole place himself and keeps the vibe mellow but professional. bartered for our time there by building him a website

the rest of the recording/tracking was done in my bedroom aka the cave – a lot of noise (and noise complaints) was created. good times in small spaces with lots of electronics, feeding of bizarre levels of light

Future Islands: “Tin Man” & “Little Dreamer” AUDIO

i’m a new convert to future islands but consider me a quick zealot. tin man is one of the most interesting songs i’ve heard in some while. the immediate grab is the vocals but the programming & overall production are all vibe city. for posterity, an older track that while not specifically exemplary of their sound, totally gets me:

MOTHERBOARD: The Granular Synthesis Of Curtis Roads

A great doc on electronic music pioneer Curtis Roads that looks at the seemingly limitless possibilities of electronic music, specifically granular synthesis (via CDM).

Very cool look at this type of music and while Roads goes (obviously) much further than I ever have thought of going in regards to synthesis, he gets at the basic point of why I find electronic instruments/techniques fascinating – they offer sounds and ideas that would be otherwise impossible trhough natural/organic musical techniques:

Empire Of The Sun: "Walking On A Dream" AUDIO

This song is pretty cheesy and reminds me of MGMT but it is also catchy as shit and I absolutely love the production, the drum sounds in particularly.

IN RAINBOWS LIVES

JESUS WOW. Unreal. I’ll try to talk about this more eloquently later…until now I defer to my favorite blogger:

Well I stayed up late for this, we might as well talk about it, yeah? Upon first (and second and third) listen, In Rainbows exceeds all the expectations we didn’t really have any time to develop. Some initial, hasty thoughts: not really feeling “Bodysnatchers,” but “Nude” through the almost dubby “House of Cards” is essentially a perfect 6-song sequence, highlighted by the “Julia”-esque “Faust Arp,” and the hypnotic, breakbeat-laden dreamscape, “All I Need.” My first impression is that this is the band’s most enchanting, instantly enjoyable work since OK Computer or Kid A. But that might have to do with the fact that it’s 2 AM. That’s all I’ll say for now, back to listening to “All I Need” and “Reckoner” for the 5th time. Oh, and the Black Lips killed on Conan too. Good night all around.

Glass Candy: "Rolling Down The Hills" and "Silver Fountain" AUDIO

I can’t get enough of the production on the most recent Glass Candy tacks. I wasn’t really into the earlier demos that we’re floating around, but the newer jams are just super soulful and atmospheric and psychedelic and wonderful. The beats are killer and I love those horns. I don’t have anything you can’t get elsewhere, but here they are anyway.
