really enjoyed reworking blackbird blackbird‘s hawaii – check it at our soundcloud

a remix we did for the homies in meanest man contest – the original is brooding and introspective, tried to flip the script a bit:
if you don’t love this song you don’t love life – a favorite cut from my favorite musician

urgency comes out tomorrow and we are very very excited. not much to say at this point except that you can order the record here & we’re playing tomorrow night (7PM) at origami vinyl to celebrate the release. vinyl and t-shirts will be on hand.
listen and download the ep below – seems like it has taken forever to get this release out in a method we are proud of so we sincerely hope you all enjoy it:

making remixes is rad, plain and simple. messing with sounds in ableton, getting to play with various synths, and re-imagining tracks in to something new is low-stress fun. i think of remixes as akin to how bands in the 60s covered each other, just updated for a digital age.
back in february xiu xiu released a bunch of ringtones for free online – in reality these were various loops from dear god, i hate myself and when i heard them my first thought was that it would be cool to piece them back together in to a coherent track. this required a lot of time pitch shifting so they were all in the same key, beat matching so they were in the same tempo, and various manipulation of the sounds – the only samples that aren’t from the original set are the drums, which we made dilla-esque. a very fun process:

local natives have been buds of ours for varying lengths of time – max has known them for a while as they used to gig around la together when they were all younger. the rest of us met them around a year and a half ago when we all went in on a rehersal space together. needless to say they don’t use that space anymore (on the road 24/7) but we stay in touch and hang when we are all in the same city. great band and we were super excited when they released stems for their album gorilla manor – lots of real synth on this which was fun to mess with:

getting your tracks remixed is an interesting process. never know quite what to expect and it never turns out like you think it will. our close friend belief remixed simple severin in to a hip-hop/electro hybrid – very cool to hear the direction this was taken. can’t really pin down what this track sounds like or reminds me of, but i can imagine him sitting in his cabin-esque house in the hills of echo park making this as the sun creeps in through the windows:

zebra & snake are somewhat the opposite of belief – they live in finland and we’ve never met. their take on contemporary individual is really rad, starting off in a realm of confusion and bringing everything in to focus. kinda like waking up and slowly adjusting your eyes to the morning, although its 4AM and you we’re deep in rem cycle 2:
