Deerhunter/Jay Reatard: “Oh It’s Such A Shame” MP3(s)

I’ve been listening to Deerhunter’s new album Microcastle nonstop since it leaked a month or so back. I want to post almost every song (with album openers “Agoraphobia” and “Never Stops” at the top of my list) but understand that having an album leak before a release date is even set has got to feel shitty, even for a firm believer in free music like myself.

Thankfully Deerhunter recently released a cover Jay Reatard’s “Oh It’s Such A Shame”, in tandem with Reatard for a split 7″ in which they trade tracks (Reatard covers Deerhunter’s “Fluorescent Grey”). I love both artists but actually prefer Deerhunter’s reworking a bit more than the original - a little less racing and urgent, allowing the song’s excellent structure and melodies to be appreciated a bit more. Both are excellent and it is rad that two artists who I respect/appreciate immensely were able to collaborate in such a way - the release is part of Reatard’s Matador 7″ release series.

Delicious Vinyl recently commissioned a bunch of artists to do remixes of their most well-known songs - I just picked up the album and while all of the tracks do good service to their predecessors, the one I really wanted to hear was how “What’s Up Fatlip?“. Thankfully Breakbot keep the original intact while re-imagining with that Parisian sound I love. Pink Enemy and Hot Chip also do a great job on their respective cuts. This new Dilla track just showed up online and it is dope as expected. Pretty reserved - sounds like it was probably just a demo - but even in rough form Dilla is better than 99.9% of producers. The other track is one of my favorite Dilla beats of all time that I’ve been meaning to get up for a while now. The kick is mapped with the bass line and it is so rugged I have to wipe the dirt off my face every time I listen to it.

Radiohead’s new video for “House of Cards” has been blogged to hell, but Peter at Create Digital Motion hits the nail on the head with why this is so cool - open-source software used to distribute the video and CC licensing the code so it is free to use under specific conditions.

Yes, it is also cool that it was shot on lazers and that it is beautiful and creepy and emotive.
