I had no idea how any of this happened today. Thankfully, BB pointed me to an amazing episode of This American Life which illuminates the central motivations of this tale: greed, irresponsibility, and rampant consumerism. These financial institutions were beyond fucked – it shouldn’t be surprising that a system built on exploitation and bull-headed lying should take place during today’s day and age but it is depressing nonetheless.
